Bridge to Terebithia

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson follows 11 year old Jess Aarons who meets Leslie Burk and become immediate friends. Together, they create the land of Terabithia, an imaginary land where they rule as king and queen. Unfortunately, one day Leslie decides to head over to Terabithia on her own, and ultimately drowns on her way there.

The setting is important to the story because it takes place both in the real world and in the imaginary land of Terabithia. This fantasy land is a place perhaps we have all imagined at one point. The other criteria is the gender and culture. We are introduced to Jess who not only loves to run, but to also paint and draw, not common with boys. We are also introduced to Leslie, who breaks the norms of what a girl should be by being a fast runner and beating all the boys.
